Frederic Chiu

Born to Chinese immigrant parents, Frederic Chiu was raised in America. After his studies at Indiana University, in piano with Karen Shaw and also in Computer Science, he continued his piano studies with Abbey Simon at the Juilliard School. Frederic Chiu's career began in French where he lived for many years and was well-known as "the American pianist." He has performed in most of the major European cities, including Rome, Milan, Brussels, Antwerp, Berlin, Frankfurt, the Hague, Warsaw, Prague, and London. In North America he has appeared in the Place des Arts in Montreal, at the Ambassador Theatre in Pasadena, the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, Lincoln Center and the Mostly Mozart Festival in New York. Frederic Chiu is a perennial guest at the Newport Music Festival and has traveled across the United States on extended recital tours with Community Concerts. His orient tours have taken him to Taiwan and Hong Kong with great success and is a permanent guest of the Beijing Central Conservatory as performer and teacher. His cosmopolitan background brings a unique approach to his music-making. "He has reinvented virtuosity...a phenomenon that must be heard." (Le Monde, Paris). инкассатор без опыта работы

An adept of the recording studio, Frederic Chiu has released twenty CD's, including eight volumes of the complete piano works of Prokofiev, a recording project that has elicited enthusiasm from Fanfare to the Wall Street Journal to France's Elle magazine. Also included in his CD releases are Liszt's transcriptions of Schubert's Schwanengesang, as well as Chopin's mazurkas, études and rondeaux. His release of three rarely-played Sonatas of Mendelssohn was chosen as "Record of the Year" by Stereo Review. Frederic Chiu records exclusively for the Harmonia Mundi label. предлагаем прогноз ставок на футбол не дорого

Since the release of his first CD, devoted to the piano transcription, he has been cited as a champion of this under-explored repertoire, following the example of his former teacher, Abbey Simon. His own arrangements, including pieces from Prokofiev's Lieutenant Kije Suite, have met with rousing success in concert and on record.

A recipient of many prestigious awards - the Avery Fisher Career Grant, the Petscheck Award, the American Pianists Association Fellowship - it was the lack of an award that first brought him international notoriety; a rare foray into the competition circuit took Frederic Chiu to Fort Worth, Texas, where his elimination before the final round of the 1993 Van Cliburn Competition roused enormous protest; prominent stories in the New York Times referred to him as the "Maverick American Pianist." help with essay

His concert activities also include a large amount of chamber music. He participates regularly in the festival "Consonances" in Saint Nazasire, France, which he co-founded in 1991 with the violinist Philippe Graffin. He collaborates with invited artists, including Gary Hoffman, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Jeremy Menuhin, the St. Lawrence Quartet and Christian Ivaldi.

Growing up with a violinist brother and having worked closely with Josef Gingold at Indiana University, Frederic Chiu reserves a special place for the violin/piano repertoire and plays often with Pierre Amoyal and Joshua Bell.

Eager to bring serious music to a larger audience, he makes special presentations for school children and collaborates with personalities outside the traditional realm of his field, including the actor Sami Frey and psychologist/writer/clown Howard Buten.

Frederic Chiu ~ Andrew De Grado

Andy was omnipresent in the round building during my last years at Indiana University--practicing or rehearsing, teaching or performing. I remember particularly the concert at the MAC, a Rachmaninoff concerto that he powered through. The arched shape of his hand as he played octaves--arched like a "normal" hand playing sixths! It was a striking image! It is obvious why he had been picked as winner of that concerto competition. Unfortunately, I was no longer at Indiana University when he won the concerto competition a second time.

I remember more precisely a few non-musical moments--parties, TV sessions late into the night, a couple of missed golf dates, food debaucheries. The condo that Andy and Richard Glazier shared was the last hangout for many nights of the year. I kept up with Andy after Indiana University through Richard. I regret not having had a chance to see him for quite a few years--a regret that is all the more saddening since his untimely death.
