 Katie Salfelder
Katie Salfelder is an eleventh
grade honor student at Fair Lawn High School. At the age of six, she began
studying music and composition at Bergen Yamaha Music School in Paramus.
She began her acoustic piano studies at the age of thirteen and has been
a student of Anthony R. Fedell of Jersey City for three and a half years.
Katie was invited by Steinway Corporation of America to help celebrate
their anniversary and performed on October 26, 2003 in the lobby of the
New Jersey Center for the Performing Arts (NJPAC) on Steinway's new 150th
Anniversary Edition piano. During the past three years, Katie has performed
in the Yamaha Junior Original Concerts at the Berrie Center of Ramapo
College. She has received two scholarships to the 2002 and 2001 Yamaha
National Jamborees in Minneapolis, MN and Phoenix, AZ. Also, Katie was
a winner in the 2001 Third Annual Andrew De Grado Piano Competition and
performed in the Winners Recital at Kean University. During the
summer of 2003 and 2001, she was invited to perform at Pops Concerts,
sponsored by St. Annes Church in Fair Lawn. In the 2002 MTNA High
School Composition Competition, Katie was the New Jersey State First Place
winner and received the Second Place award in the Eastern Division for
her original composition The Flight of the Phoenix. Katie
submitted her recent composition, Fugue and Postlude, to the 2003
MTNA High School Composition Competition and has just been notified that
she is the New Jersey First Place winner and will perform her composition
on November 15, at the New Jersey Shore Arts Center in Ocean Grove, New
Jersey.
Katie enjoys participating as a volunteer at Valley Hospital in Ridgewood,
where she performs on their grand piano in the reception/waiting area
for outpatients and visitors. Besides piano, Katie is a member of the
Fair Lawn High School Marching Band where she plays the marimba. In addition
to music, she enjoys math, cycling, and swimming.
Katie Salfelder is a winner in the 2003 Fifth Annual Andrew De Grado Piano
Competition in the soloist category with her performance of Danzas Argentinas
by Alberto Ginastera.
